For the past 12 months, every piece of news about the motoring industry has been about how it’s been so badly effected by the recession. Almost every week you read how the motoring industry is struggling due to the fact that people aren’t going to buy a new Alfa Romeo. However, despite rarely hearing about them, there are a few sectors of the motoring industry that have not been affected by the recession.

The sector of the motoring industry that is coping the best is the second hand market. Prices of used cars have been going against the flow of the recession, they have been rising. This may not sound very positive for the customer because you will have to pay more for used cars, however, if yu are going to do a part exchange, you will find you will get alot more for your old car.

The reason why this part of the industry has become popular is that people are trying to save as much cash as they can. In an attempt to save as much as possible, they are deciding to buy a second hand car rather a fresh, new one. One big thing that hasn’t helped the new car market recover is that recently, prices have risen because of the recession. You’d think that car manufacturers wouldn’t dare rising prices, however, because the exchange rates are poor, they are forced to raise some of their prices.

Due to the sudden rise in popularity for second hand cars, the demand for them has risen massively. As the demand rises, and with the scrappage scheme in place, it’s becoming harder to buy a second hand car. Now because used car dealers are running out of cars to sell, they are offering more for trading in a car, making it sound like a better deal for car owners looking to sell.

The only downside to this is that because you are getting more money for your old car, you are having to pay more when you buy your new used car. So because the price rises are on both sides, selling and buying, you are not actually getting any extra cash for your car because you lose it when you buy a new one, but the majority of the public would still prefer to buy a second hand motor rather than a buy a Honda just as it’s rolled off the production line.

It appears that the only customers that will lose out as a result of the price rises is people that don’t trade in an older car.

Thousands of Honda employees have returned to work at the company’s Swindon plant after production was halted for four months in response to the struggling car market. All 3,400 of the returning workers will be taking a pay cut until 2010 but are glad to be back at work with their jobs secure after the uncertainty of the last four months.

The factory was forced to close while the company decided on the best way of dealing with the problems caused by the global recession and the effect the economic downturn has had on the number of car sales and contract hire agreements. The motoring industry has been hit hardest of all and many car manufacturing companies are struggling to make ends meet, but the situation at Honda and how they have recovered could stand as an example to other companies who are still struggling. Tamporarily suspending production at the Swindon plant has allowed them time to make important decisions about the future of the business as well as complete maintenance work that had been in the pipeline for a while. During the four months downtime the production lines were stripped down and rebuilt, and the entire plant was redecorated, where possible by employees who had the specialist skills required for the job.

But not everything is good news. A further 1,300 Swindon employees chose to take voluntary redundancy when the factory closed, many of whom are still out of work. And although the employees returning to work now know their jobs are secure, they have agreed to a pay cut of 3%, or 5% for those in management positions, for the duration of the next 10 months. The plant is only running at 50% of its normal capacity, with a predicted total production of 113,000 vehicles in 2009, less than half of the original 228,000 estimate.

In short, it’s a small victory but the company is not out of the woods yet, Honda car leasing and sales figures will have to increase significantly over the next few months if they want to avoid any further disasters. The new Honda Jazz model, due to start production at Swindon in September, should increase sales and give a clearer picture of the long-term future of the Swindon factory. Not to mention as the economy begins to recover buyers will be taking advantage of low car prices as across the board from Honda to Mercedes, car leasing and purchase prices are cheaper than ever.

For great deals on van leasing and van contract hire

The Energy department of the US government have given Ford, Nissan and Tesla a total sum of $8 billion. This money is going to be used to create new jobs while developing fuel efficient cars for the future.

The money is designed to help increase the development of greener cars, aswell as increasing the amount of jobs in the industry.

The overall loan will be split up differently to each manufacturer. Ford has received a large amount, $5.9 billion. This money will be spent developing new electric cars, aswell as new technology for current gasoline powered cars.

This money given to Ford has been very handy because of the extremely low interest rate of around 3.75%. If Ford had tried to get this money on the market, they would end up paying double figure interest rates.

Nissan will be receiving the second large amount of the loan, $1.6 billion. They have released details that the money will be spent making lithium ion batteries in one of their car plants. These new batteries will be going into a new electric car that’s being developed for 2012.

Finally, Tesla are walking away will a relatively small amount compared to Ford. Tesla are only receiving a loan of $465 million. A lump of the money is going to be used to build a factory in California to develop their new Model S Sedan. The other part of their loan will be going towards building parts for other car makers.

Now they have received this money, we should start seeing a large number of electric cars being developed and released onto the car market. Being able to choose from an electric car over gasoline would save a leaser even more money. I imagine a huge number of people with a Ford lease or Nissan lease would love to have an electric car as this would save them even more money.

If you are a car fan you know that part of the market is examining new models as they enter the showroom. There’s just something special about a new automobile : the smell, the look, the price tag! For some 17,000,000 American drivers a new automobile is in their future, while many others select the used car market. Some of the automobiles on the market today are hot, hot, hot! Let’s take a look at several new and future offerings from Dodge.

Thanks in part to new ownership [Daimler Benz acquired the Chrysler Enterprise in 1998] a fresh infusion of great looking Dodge models have hit a showroom near you. Additional models are soon to appear and the refresh that Dodge has been receiving is nothing but astonishing. These are some of my favorites:

Magnum – who said that a station lorry should resemble a family hauler? The Magnum sure doesn’t. With an intimidating grille and a rakish exterior, the Magnum is a true man pleaser while also giving ladies a bit additional room in the back to haul stuff. Chuck in a Hemi and the Magnum truly rocks!

Charger – O.K , so the new Charger has four doors. Well, you can not have everything. You can have macho looks, a robust engine, and a vehicle that is sure to fight against anything that Japan or Germany throws its way. Word has it that DaimlerChrysler is considering a coupe version. Now, would not that be cool!

Caliber – Bye, bye Neon. The Neon served Dodge well, but it isn’t in the same caliber as the Caliber. Pun intended. To be introduced in Spring 2006 as a 2007 model, the Caliber will have 3 engine selections : 1.8, 2.0, and 2.4 I4s, a continuously available transaxle, and all wheel drive. In addition, 2.0L diesel engines should be available outside of the North American market – why not here? – as DaimlerChrysler sets to introduce the Dodge name into new markets.

Other Dodge vehicles that are getting spotted include the Ram and Dakota pick up wagons, the Durango SUV and the shortly to get introduced Dodge Nitro, the division’s version of the compact Jeep Freedom . Oh, yup, who could forget the 510-hp V10 Viper? Can you say, Corvette beater?

One word you cannot associate with Dodge anymore is the word, “boring.” Exciting cars, vans, and SUVs for a market craving these kinds of hot automobiles. I guess the “ram” insignia actually does befit the name.
