Applying for a provisional licence should be your first port of call when you begin to learn to drive. Once you are over the age of 17 it is legal to learn to drive. Applying couldn’t be a simpler process. You can either go onto the website of the DVLA to get an application form or you can get one from your local post office.
You should send the completed application form to the DVLA along with a colour passport photo and original proof of identification such as a birth cert or passport. You will also have to include the application fee. Problems notwithstanding, you should receive your provisional driving licence within two to three weeks. You will receive two documents which are a photo card and an A4 paper document. As both parts constitute the licence it is imperative that you keep them safe. You will be required to present both parts of your licence when you go to take your driving test. Your test will be cancelled if you fail to bring both parts of the licence with you.
As soon as you have your provisional licence you can start to learn to drive. There are restrictions in place regarding the size and type of car that you can drive. A provisional licence holder can also only drive in the company of a full licence driver who is 21 years or older and has held their full licence for three years or more
It is essential that any car being driven by a provisional licence holder is insured and displaying the learner signs in the proper place. It may be a good idea to pay for a qualified driving instructor as this can take away the hassle of insuring the family car etc. However you can get out there and begin learning to drive as soon as you have your provisional licence.
If you are looking for a driving related job, any potential employer is well withing their right to do official checks to the type of license you hold . Licence checks is something that should be taken seriously. Don’t try applying for specific driving jobs without first holding the appropiate license.
